We’ve all heard the term CrossFit, but what exactly is it?
CrossFit is a style of workouts that was founded in 2000 by Greg Glassman, that combine high-intensity interval training (HIIT), cardio, Olympic style weightlifting, powerlifting, plyometrics and gymnastics. The goal of CrossFit is to improve fitness, strength and conditioning by consistently varying workouts to include functional movements at high intensity. CrossFit is promoted as a lifestyle that includes exercise and nutrition to help just about anyone achieve fitness goals from weight loss to improved performance.
There is no doubt that CrossFit is an incredible workout and can be a fun, effective way to reach your fitness goals. As with any other sport or exercise program, it must be done properly in order to avoid injury. Even when done correctly injuries can occur. Some common injuries include disc problems, low back, pelvic, hip, knee and shoulder injuries. Many of these injuries are due to improper form, repetition, muscle imbalances and joint misalignments. That is where Chiropractic care comes into the picture.
Chiropractic care for the cross fitter focuses on identifying dysfunctional movement patterns, muscle imbalances and areas of increased joint stress. Once areas of dysfunction are identified they can be corrected through a combination of full body Chiropractic adjustments. These adjustments include not only spinal adjustments, but adjustments to the knees, hips, ankles, shoulders and wrists as well. In addition, soft tissue release, stretching, postural reeducation and functional exercises can also help to decrease pain and muscle tightness, and improve range of motion.
Pain and dysfunction are not the only indicators for Chiropractic care for the cross fitter. Regular Chiropractic care helps maintain mobility, improve stability, balance and coordination and identifies issues before they become a bigger problem so you can keep up with your WODs and continue tackling your fitness goals. Chiropractic and CrossFit share similar philosophies on health and wellness, to optimize your body’s innate potential. Your body is an incredible machine and if you treat it well, it can do some pretty amazing things!
